When in the late 1980s, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, my family and I became one. Merely three years later, my father was diagnosed with the same disease. Both times I felt helpless. My mother’s illness took longer to treat, but when it was over she went back to work less than two months later.
My father's illness took him one month to get better, but after his treatment he had to spend nine months in hospital. And yet, somehow they both came out of their illnesses alive and well. They had each other for support and they had me to help them get through their tough times.
The struggle of getting back on our feet after the loss of our parents brought us together as a family. For that reason alone I am thankful that my life is full of both joy and tough times.
